A SET OF IRISH GEORGE II WALNUT DINING-CHAIRS
The two armchairs and seven side chairs circa 1750, five side chairs of a later date
Each undulating toprail with rosette bosses to the corners and pierced vasiform splats, the seats upholstered in a close-nailed floral designed woven black horsehair, the arms with scrolled acanthus terminals, raised on floral-carved cabriole legs with boldly carved claw and ball feet, all but one of the chairs with metal inventory tab consisting of three numbers and the letters WCW (14)

Lot Essay

These chairs are of the same design and possibly en suite with a stool that once formed part of the celebrated collection of Sir John H. Ward, K.C.V.O. at Dudley House in London (reproduced here and illustrated in H. Cescinsky, 'The Collection of the Hon. Sir John H. Ward, K.C.V.O.', The Connoisseur, March 1921, p.145, no.XIII). Another stool of the same design from the Harvard University Art Museums was sold in these Rooms, 21 January 1999, lot 324. The chairs are constructed with ash rails, a typical secondary wood for furniture produced in Ireland.
