Cylindrical on three lion couchant feet, with rope-twist bands, the plain body with hinged flat-topped cover and hedgehog thumbpiece, the scroll handle formed as a sea-monster, marked on body and under cover, also stamped under base PAYNE OXFORD

Lot Essay

The 1669 Kyrle tankard by Thomas Jenkins is the inspiration for this tankard, retailed by Payne and Son Ltd., Oxford. The distinctive hedgehog thumbpiece is the crest of John Kyrle, "the Man of Ross," who donated the Jenkins's tankard to Balliol College, Oxford.
