A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER TWO-LIGHT WALL SCONCES
Most pieces with Maker's mark of Benjamin Smith, London, 1807
Each backplate in the form of overlapping acanthus leaves, with a semi-circular upper fluted simulated reservoir rising to an acanthus-clad finial; each backplate supporting two scrolling candle arms, applied with acanthus leaves with inner four-petal flower and terminating at the end in a dolphin's head, his open mouth supporting the fluted reservoir, and each with a detachable candle nozzle with fluting near the upper border; the backplates and reservoirs engraved with a crest and garter, the nozzles engraved with crest only, marked as follows: Backplates: marked with lion passant, maker's mark, date letter, and duty mark under bases; Arms: three marked on the end of the attachment portion with date letter, lion passant and duty mark only, one unmarked; Reservoir: all four marked at the upper rim with maker's mark and lion passant only; Candle nozzles: each marked with lion passant, maker's mark, date letter and duty mark under the base. Possibly adapted from candelabra arms.
