A BYZANTINE BRONZE CROSS
Designed as a bronze cross, the sculpted bail hinged and suspending a Byzantine shaped cross decorated on the front and reverse with a figure, now mounted with a fluted glass base engraved with leaf veins, the top now with a hinged gray metal leaf, circa 9th-11th century AD, 6.20 in.
The cross was originally a gift from Mme. Lazareff to Mlle. Chanel, who gave it to M. Goossens, for inpiration to design jewelry for her.
