Lot Essay

Probably a fragment from a depiction of the Earthly Paradise, comparable with the Creation of Eve in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt am Main, inv.no.1097 (see fig.1) (K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jüngere, 1984, pp.285/6, cat.no.104, ill.), in which the artist followed prototypes by his father, such as the picture in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, 1979, pp.605/6, cat.no.291, fig.314).
