Initially, Lhermitte executed this composition in 1902 under the title Le Goûter des Moissonneurs. This version measured 90 x 108 cm. and was sold to Boussoud, Valadon & Cie. The present work is a smaller version of the 1902 composition. Lhermitte, during the later part of his life spent time reworking his preferred compositions.
