Lot Essay

Ronald Alley in the 1982 exhibition catalogue writes 'In the later 1950s Sutherland began progressively to extend the range of his animal themes, and he painted several pictures of bats and toads, as well as a heron and an eagle. The bat is seen hanging upside-down. Sutherland made his studies of bats in the natural history museum at Nice'.
