Lot Essay

This pair of bronzes are after the marble groups generally attributed to Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), one of the originals having been made for the Duc de Chartres; a version in terracotta was included in Houdon's sale of 1795. A similar pair in bronze are in the Wallace Collection (See J.G. Mann, Wallace Collection Catalogues: Sculpture, 2nd Ed., 1981, pp. 79-80, S 217 and 218, pl.54).
