Patrick Heron in the introduction of the 1976 Hayward Gallery exhibition catalogue wrote of these works of the immediate Post-War period 'These early figurative works (and by far the best of them, and most numerous, were in gouache ...) were extremely compact and precise and based on minutely accurate observation of landscape forms'.
