Oblong, on four circular stepped feet, the body and hinged cover decorated with opaque and translucent cloisonné enamel floral and foliate motifs within partly raised borders of geometric motifs, the sides applied with twelve en-plein enamel coats-of-arms of the Riazan' districts, the ends with two stylized swing handles, the cover applied with a stepped roundel enclosing an en-plein enamel coat-of-arms of Riazan' province within gilt crowned ribbon-tied oak wreath on blue ground, marked under base

Lot Essay

The province of Riazan' lies to the south east of Moscow, and was from 11th to 16th century an independant principality, ruled by descendents of Riurik, the Varangian who became the first recognized ruler of ancient Rus, until it was conquered by Moscow and absorbed into the Grand Duchy. As a province (guberniia) of the Russia Empire, in 1802 it was divided into twelve districts (uezdy) centred around the major towns of Riazan', as provincial capital, Mikhailov, Zaraisk, Dan'kov, Pronsk, Spassk, Sapozhok. Skopin, Egor'evsk, Ranenburg, Kasimov and Riazhsk, as shown on the casket from front left moving to the right.
