Oblong with rounded corners, the sides overall decorated with gilt scrolls on green ground with stylized roosters, the upper half with cartouches enclosing alternating varicolored foliage and geometric design on gilt ground, the raised hinge cover depicting the mythical bird Sirin on gilt within gilt scrolls and Pan-Slavic geometric design, fully marked

Lot Essay

In the old Russian fables and epics Sirin appears in her usual form of a bird with a woman's head and breast; she is based on the ancient Greek Sirens.
