Lot Essay

The present lot shows one of the favourite themes of the artist: a cowherd with cattle on a wide sandy road, walking towards the viewer. Most of the paintings with this subject were executed in the province of Drente, where the artist spent yearly his summers from 1880 onwards. For further information on the artist's period in Drente, see S. de Bodt a.o., De Haagse School in Drenthe, Zwolle 1997, pp. 59-69.
