Stanley Cursiter was born and educated in Kirkwall, Orkney. He studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and later spent much of his life in Edinburgh, although his heart remained in Orkney. After 1948 when Cursiter was no longer Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, he spent more time in Orkney devoting more time to painting and to the conservation of St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall.
