The present work which dates from 1921 belongs to an important period of Cursiter's career. During the First World War he had served in France and before the end of the war he married Phyllis Hourston: after de-mobilisation in 1919 he travelled with her to Cassis and Avignon, before returning to Edinburgh in 1920, where he set up a studio. A larger painting entitled 'The Pewter Jug' (Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow University) dates from the same year. Paintings from this period show an elegant and fluid technique that have a clear affinity with the Colourists. From 1924 to 1948 Cursiter was Keeper then Director of the National Galleries of Scotland.
