The IIId was the first production Leica to be fitted with a delayed action timer, based on a design for clockwork delayed action release for the prototype Leica IV. Plans for the IV were abandoned, but the design for the dealyed action release was modified for the IIId. Hasbroek records that in total 631 Leica IIId cameras were produced during 1939-40, but the delayed action timers proved to be unreliable and the cameras were stored until they were sold off - incomplete and complete - in 1945. The release mechanism was later improved and incorporated into Leica IIIf and IIIg models.
