'The Royal Engineers Establishment at Chatham was founded in 1812 by Captain Charles William Pasely for instruction of the Corps of Royal Engineers in practical architecture and surveying. Their expertise was applied to numerous civil projects including the construction of the South Kensington Museum and the installation of the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. At the Paris exhibition several Corp members received training in photography. This was soon put to practical use, and they were asked to send back periodical photographs of all works in progress'.
