A small album of over 100 photographs, gelatin silver prints, approx. 3½ x 2½ in. to approx. 6½ x 4½ in., occasional captions in pencil on mounts, a few only loosely inserted, brown leather (lacking front cover and disbound) 63/8 x 9¼ in., with a copy of a one-page obituary of Mayer, undated, from the Buffalo Evening News; a bromoil print by A. W. Hill, 9½ x 113/8 in., mounted and signed in pencil; and four miscellaneous albums including cartes-de-visite by Hills & Saunders and others

Lot Essay

Gustav Mayer, described as a leading photomechanic, was known particularly for his work as a photo-engraver and for experimental work in photolitho colour reproduction. His album includes self-portraits and other portraits, photographers at work, Camera Club outings, mining subjects, pictorial landscapes, some identified as Colorado, river scenes, wildlife and plants.
