Lot Essay

Painted in the summer of 1908, Sonninger Garten was executed in Bonn, immediately after Macke's return from his second trip to Paris. Formally in the collection of Dr Wolfgang Macke, the artist's son, this painting is a classic early work that Macke executed in an Impressionistic style.

Between 1907-1909 Macke made three trips to Paris where he closely studied the work of the French Impressionists and the latest colourist experiments of the avant-garde. These developments transformed his early work and ultimately led to his exploration of colour synthesis that characterises his mature work. On this second trip to Paris, Macke was accompanied by his patron Bernard Koehler and Elisabeth Gerhardt, who was later to become his wife as well as the artist's favourite model. It is probably Elisabeth who is shown seated in the leafy shade on the left of this picture.

With its light coloured brushstrokes, and the dissolved contours of light and shade, Sonniger Garden is a work that elegantly captures the peaceful atmosphere of residential garden on a bright sunny afternoon.
