Sold with a photo-certificate from Matthias Eberle dated Berlin, den 28.3.1999. The painting is recorded in the Liebermann archives as no. 1880/15a.

The present picture is a study relating to Liebermann's celebrated Altmännerhaus in Amsterdam of 1880, one of his most famous works pivoting about the most important subject in the artist's oeuvre: the harmony between man and nature. Here, in particular, Liebermann depicts older men relaxing on the benches, surrounded by the lush greenery of a late summer's day.
The first owner of the painting who acquired it directly from Max Liebermann, Th. Toperan, was the manager of the Galerie Paul Cassirer in Berlin, who later opened his own gallery.
