The cartouche-shaped padded back, armrests and serpentine-fronted seat covered in green-striped material, the arms on channelled serpentine scrolling supports, on channelled tapering cabriole legs headed by scrolled shells with pendant husks, restorations to the seat-rails, with pegged construction

Lot Essay

This elegantly-serpentined armchair, designed in the Louis XV manner, relates to the fashionable cabriolet chairs of the 1770s such as Thomas Malton illustrated in his Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775, pl. XXXIII, fig. 131.
A related pair was sold by the Executors of the late Julian D. Layton O.B.E., in these Rooms, 19 April 1990, lot 183 and a further similar pair was sold by Archibald Stirling of Keir, Keir Mains, Dunblane, Perthshire, Christie's house sale, 22 May 1995, lot 111.
