Lot Essay

In 1917 Violet Trefusis had a passionate but doomed affair with Vita Sackville-West, a member of the Bloomsbury set and comtemporary of Virginia Woolf. Violet's mother, Alice Keppel's indomitable determination coupled with convention ensured that Violet married Denys Trefusis and left for France leaving Vita in England. Recently a number of letters between Vita and Violet have been published which are testament to the love between them which lasted until the end of their lives.
