A CELTIC SANDSTONE ANTEFIX IN THE FORM OF A HEAD
CIRCA 3RD-2ND CENTURY B.C.
The stylized head carved in relief at one end of the sandstone block, with large double-lined lentoid eyes, flat well defined nose and open slit-like mouth, the hair indicated with an arc of radiating striations
10 in. (25.4 cm.) high; 15½ in. (40 cm.) deep
Provenance
Found about eighty years ago, while ploughing a field in Sollers Hope, South Herefordshire, close to a known Roman camp.
