The backscrolled rectangular padded back, outscrolled padded arms and seat covered in ivory and yellow-striped material, the shaped sunk- panelled scrolled arms decorated with acanthus, flanking a sunk-panelled seat-rail, on ring-turned fluted and gadrooned legs headed by rectangular patera panels, on modern castors, inscribed in pencil to the underside of the front seat-rail 'No 751', lacking the back castors

Lot Essay

The settee with Grecian-scrolled arms wrapped by palm-flowered acanthus relates to patterns in the George IV antique or Grecian manner illustrated in P. and M.A. Nicholson's, The Practical Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer, and Complete Decorator, 1826. The closest parallel is a settee engraved in T. King's The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829 (E.T. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, pp.292 and 293.
