The frame chanelled overall with padded oval back, arms and serpentine fronted seat covered in green floral trellis work, the scrolled arms on downswept supports with a waived seat-rail on cabriole legs and pointed feet, restorations and reinforcements to the back

Lot Essay

This serpentine frame in the French manner relates in character to the 'cabriole' chair in Thomas Malton's Complete Treatise on Perspective, 1775, pl. XXXIII, fig 131. This chair belongs to a group tradionally associated with John Cobb (d. 1788) of St. Martin's Lane, 'upholsterer' to King George III, and from 1761 in partnership with William Vile (d. 1767).
A similar model but ebonised were sold anonymously in these Rooms, 8 July 1993, lot 17.
