The unusual scrolled base of this brass mounted centre table may have been inspired by the design for a Marqueterie Centre Table published by Richard Bridgens in Furniture and Candelabra, 1838. The form was quickly adopted by Edward Homes Baldock (d.1845) who operated from premises in Hanway Street, London and who invoiced the Duke of Buccleuch on 30 September 1840 for 'A beautiful octagonal Ebony Table with pictures in each side - flowers in the centre...' which is currently at Temple Newsam, (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1978, pp. 318-321, no. 395). A
