Lot Essay

This elegant work-table with its portable bookrest and carrying handle, follows the design of a 'sheveret' table that appears in Gillow's Estimate-Sketch Book, 1790, dated 5 July. A stamped cheveret table of similar form was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 17 November 1988, lot 158. A similar satinwood cheveret table, although with a galleried stretcher, is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. II, p. 54 fig. 1.
