Lot Essay

Undoubtedly executed under the direction of a marchand-mercier such as Lazare Duvaux, with their bold, sculptural mounts these vases are of similar chracter to the oeuvre of Jean-Claude Duplessis (1695-1774). Appointed orfèvre du roi, Duplessis worked for both Madame de Pompadour and Jean-François Oeben, amongst others.

A pair of vases of similar form from the Grog-Carven Bequest is now in the Musée du Louvre (illustrated in P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés, Paris, 1989, p.123, fig.159).
