Lot Essay

The overmantel-frame may have been designed to incorporate the glass from an early 18th Century mirror, and with its serpentine form, rustic trees, pagoda-swept cornices, and Gothic quatrefoils, it relates to patterns for picturesque frames published in Thomas Johnson's, One Hundred and Fifty New Design, London, 1758.

A related C-scroll and acanthus-carved mirror was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 12 July 1990, lot 48, while another similar mirror is illustrated in G. Wills, English Looking Glasses, London, 1965, pl. 80.
