Lot Essay

This clothes-press follows an earlier and more sophisticated Gillows design in their Estimate Sketch Book, 19 April 1798, for 'A Mahogany Wardrobe', which was supplied to Robert Philips (d.1844) for The Park, Prestwick, Manchester and sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 7 July 1995, lot 114. The above clothes-press, has been designed along the same simple lines but differs in some respects, lacking the 'Dentul Cornice', the fielded panels and the tapering bracket feet have been replaced with the more fashionable extended bun feet.
