Extracts from letters: Letter 1 from Camp Chamlee is a diatribe against the Afghans, he is en route to Kurnaul and then on to Cabul " .......where our presence is much required to revenge the death of the whole of the 44th Regt. which has been cut to pieces by the Afghans.....they have likewise murdered all the ladies, sick and hostages that have fallen into their hands. Since the campaign first commenced in '38 no less than 100 officers have fallen and 3,000 men. You have no idea what a revengeful being I feel myself to be, but it is not to be wondered at when I hear of such unheard of attrocities as have been committed to our women and children in the North"Letter 2 from Kurnaul mentions that orders have been received to march to Ferozepure (17 days) and that news of the 9th Regt. engaged in the Khyber Pass indicates that they have lost 110 men
