"Burton" correspondence (No. 49) to London, annotated "On Field Service FHM Burton 5B Fd Hospl B.F.F. No extra charge" showing, on reverse, a good strike of the rare "BURMESE FIELD/SUB P.O./NO 2" single-ring d.s., various charge and tax markings. A very rare Mongaung Expedition cover and the finest of the three that Burton sent (photocopies of the other two with lot) accompanied by an interesting letter. Photo

Extracts from letter: Headed "Sinbo (or Trenbo) in camp above rocky defile Irrawaddy River, Burmah Field Force", Burton refers to a 6 day march across the Rachin mountains and states "Tomorrow we leave here and start our march to Mogaung... which has been beseiged by Li-win-sho, a Chinees chief who has issued a proclamation to the effect that he will drive the English out of Burmah...". He then goes on to enthuse about the beauty of the country and opines "... I believe that Burmah will become one of the richest countries in the world when it is properly opened up..."
