Typed manuscript signed ("Ed Borein"), being the typescript for his well-known short story The Awakening. Borein adds in pencil above the text on the first page "The Awakening by Ed Borein." 5 pages, quarto, no place or date. The Awakening is one of only three or four short stories written and or published by Borein, and it tells the story of a shanghaied cowboy. Borein's style was cowboy through and through and he wrote in the colorful vernacular of the frontier characters in whose company he had spent so much of his youth. In the story the cowboy protagonist goes to bed drunk in San Francisco and awakens on a Whaler heading for the Arctic Circle. "It was the first one I ever see; but I sure knowed it was a ship. There was no land. There wasn't no land in sight an' the boat was a 'pitchin' around like a wild bronc. I climb out on deck, an' as I see a bunch of men down on the other end I started down where they was. I sure had to hang on. I couldn't walk a little bit. I kep' gettin' madder an' madder as I went along. When I got up to where they was I was sure ringy an' I says: 'Who the hells goadin' this outfit?" After some adventures he eventually retuns home.
