A SINGLE-STRAND NATURAL PEARL NECKLACE
THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN SOLD TO BENEFIT THE LIVING WORD MINISTRIES & LIVING WORD This pearl necklace was formerly in the collection of Elvira Fisher-Hansen McNair, daughter of Issac Vail Brokaw, a clothing manufacturer and real estate investor in New York City. In 1887-88, he had a French chateau-style mansion constructed at the corner of 79th Street and Fifth Avenue. Over the next twenty-three years, he built three other residences on adjoining properties for his two sons and daughter. The four remained a landmark for many decades until, in 1965, three of the residences were demolished; the house at 985 Fifth Avenue still stands. There was such a vociferous outcry at the loss of these important buildings that the mayor signed an ordinance granting the Landmarks Committee legal power over such matters in the future.
