Lot Essay

At the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, the firm of Ferdinand Barbedienne won a Grande Medaille d'Honneur for its display of furniture, vases, coupes, candelabra and other ornaments, and in his report on the state of design at the exhibition, Richard Redgrave praised the company for its innovative designs "in the Greek style...of great merit and beautiful execution".
