A Rare Flintlock Royal Mail Coach Blunderbuss
By H.W. Mortimer & Co., Gun Makers to his Majesty, London, circa 1805
With belled brass barrel signed in full on the top of the breech and numbered '236', the flat of the muzzle engraved 'For His Majesty (sic) Mail Coach', shaped iron tang, signed flat bevelled lock with safety-catch (cock loose on spindle), figured walnut full stock (some bruising, cracked in the ramrod-channel), plain brass mounts of service type, and horn-tipped ramrod with worm, London proof marks

Lot Essay

Harvey Walklate 2 Mortimer was in partnership with his father and uncle as 'H.W. Mortimer, Son & T. Mortimer' or 'H.W. Mortimer & Co.' at 89 Fleet Street between 1799 and 1806

Given to the late owner by John H.B. Mauley of Carlisle, and sold with a letter from the donor dated 17 September 1943
