A Fine 20-Bore French Flintlock Fowling-Piece With Spanish Barrel
By Allevin à Paris, dated 1733, the barrel by Joseph Molas of Ripoll, circa 1690
With long three-stage barrel stamped twice with maker's mark at the breech and with spirally fluted intermediary section, silver spider fore-sight and gold-lined touch-hole, engraved tang, signed flat bevelled lock engraved with Juno in her chariot, the tail and cock-retaining screw each finely chiselled in low relief on a punched and gilt ground, the former with a trophy of the chase, finely figured walnut full stock (fore-end cracked, some chips and repairs) carved in relief with a grotesque mask behind the rear ramrod-pipe and foliate scrolls around the barrel tang, engraved parcel-gilt steel mounts chiselled with strapwork and foliage on a punched and gilt ground and including dated butt-plate and pierced side-plate, the latter involving an oval escutcheon engraved with crest, motto, and coronet of Home, Earls of Douglas, and original bone ramrod (tip an old replacement)

Lot Essay

The decoration is based on Nouveaux desseins d'Arquebuseries engraved by De Lacollombe and published in Paris circa 1720

The maker is probably Tristan Allevin (recorded 1727-1747), who worked in the rue St. André-des-Arts
