With earlier blued two-stage barrel retained by two spring-held slotted iron barrel bands and with turned girdle, gold spider fore-sight and gold-inlaid breech section signed in gold 'En Madrid, Joachin De Zelaia, Año De 1745' and struck with two gold-lined marks (Lavin 22) with gold-lined fleur-de-lys mark above, gold-lined touch-hole, shaped tang finely engraved with foliage on a punched ground, engraved flat lock with moulded border, chiselled details, and gold-lined punzón of Targarona (Neue Støckel 1081), figured fruitwood full stock (minor bruises) carved in relief at the barrel tang and with fluted butt, finely engraved iron mounts decorated with rococo ornament, shaped rounded side-plate, scrolled trigger-guard with further gold-lined punzón of Targarona and with shell-shaped finial, shaped heel-plate, and original ivory-tipped ramrod

Francisco Targarona is recorded between 1773 and the Peninsular War (1808-14). He was a student of Francisco López, and was appointed one of four gunsmiths to King Carlos IV, replacing Francisco Garcia. Celaya (d. 1760) studied under Juan Fernández, and was gunsmith to King Fernando VI
