An Unusual 25-Bore Flintlock Sporting Carbine
The lock signed Gio. Botti, early 18th Century
With heavy swamped two-stage barrel cut with eight grooves, the forward section polygonal and with brass fore-sight, the breech section fluted octagonal with a ramp at the rear, plain tang with folding back-sight, signed rounded lock partly chiselled in relief in the Brescian manner with monster-heads and scrollwork on a punched ground, moulded figured walnut full stock with fluted butt and fore-end (minor defects), gilt-brass mounts cast and chased in relief in the Brescian manner en suite with the lock (gilding worn), the tang of the trigger-guard stamped with the initials 'B.C.S.P.Z.S.', gilt-brass fore-end cap and trigger-plate en suite, iron sling swivels, and wooden ramrod with gilt-brass tip, the butt-plate of leather retained by brass dome-headed nails

Lot Essay

This belongs to a group of such firearms which are believed to have been made or assembled in the workshops at Schloß Ettersburg, perhaps using Brescian parts. The group is probably peculiar to the Saxe-Weimar armoury, although the present carbine does not conform to the more usual types, the great majority of the weapons being either guns or pistols
