A Very Fine Cased Pair Of 32-Bore Percussion Duelling Pistols

With browned twist octagonal multi-groove rifled sighted barrels each signed in full on the top flat, scroll engraved case-hardened patent breeches each with engraved pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved case-hardened tangs and detented locks, the former each incorporating the back-sight, the latter each with blued safety-catch and inscribed 'Jn. Manton & Son Patent', finely figured walnut half-stocks, chequered butts, finely engraved blued iron mounts, silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, blued barrel bolts, blued set triggers, horn fore-end caps, and original brass-tipped ramrods, in vitually unused condition: in original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including three-way flask covered in red leather, and original serial numbered bullet mould, the lid with trade label and flush-fitting carrying handle, the whole set in exceptional original condition throughout, London proof marks

Lot Essay

The case contains a handwritten letter dated 19 March 1967, on Arundel Castle headed paper, from the Duke of Norfolk to the late owner regarding the purchase of these pistols: 'Thank you for your letter. Please take this one for a receipt which I fear I forgot to give you. I am so glad you are pleased. Many thanks for your book.'

The case also contains a signed folded 'General Game Certificate, for the Year 1837' for '...the Division of Marylebone in the County of Middlesex' made out to Lord Fitzallan (sic) of No. 1 Hyde Park Place
