A CHARLES II BLACK AND GILT LACQUER CABINET ON SILVERED WOOD STAND

The arched and pierced scrolling flowering acanthus crest with central Neptune figure holding a trident flanked to each corner by a putto, the returns similarly carved centered by a shell, the cabinet case with a pair of doors with pierced foliate and engraved lacquered brass corner mounts, hinges and elaborate repoussé lockplate, decorated to the front with figures in a rocky landscape with pagodas, trees and birds, the sides with birds amidst foliage or with a pagoda in a landscape with birds and trees, the interior fitted with a range of drawers and decorated with courtly figures and birds in a landscape, on a base with pierced scrolling acanthus waist above scrolling flowering acanthus pierced apron, the front with central bearded figure holding a shaft, possibly Zeus, each side centered by a shell, on putto-headed and acanthus-carved volute legs with inscrolled feet, with the typed label G-51/CHARLES II BLACK LACQUER CABINET./(carved silvered pediment. Pair folding doors in upper part)/July 1946, the cabinet stamped TE, the decoration largely refreshed, particularly to the interior
