Cylindrical, on removable base with three ball feet, the sides and domed cover set with pierced openwork scrolling foliage enclosing exotic birds and flowers, with two caryatid foliate scroll handles, the cover with acanthus bud finial, apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

Cagework cups are often found unmarked or with maker's mark only. A virtually identical unmarked example was sold by Christie's, London, April 8, 1970, lot 121, while an example by Thomas Jenkins with similar caryatid handles is at the British Museum and illustrated in Ash, How to Identify English Drinking Vessels, 1600-1830. One with eagle feet, maker's mark of Nicholas Wollaston, was sold from the collection of Mrs. Elizabeth Rosenberg, Christie's, New York, December 10, 1986, lot 119.
