With straight sides, raised on four snail feet, with egg-and-dart rim, the hinged cover chased to represent a scallop shell, the back of side prick-engraved with initials EL over AC, also engraved under base with block initials C over AM, marked inside base and under cover

A spice box by the same maker, of 1612, was offered from the collection of Mrs. Winston F.C. Guest, Sotheby's, New York, June 17, 1981, lot 55. A spice box with similar snail feet, of 1613, was sold in the same rooms, April 27, 1973, lot 163. A further example of 1610 with shell feet was sold at Christie's, New York, April 16, 1999, lot 242.
