Marie-Jean Augustin, called Auguste Vestris (Paris 1760-1842) was the son of Gaetan Vestris, the well-known dancer and later ballet-master of the Paris Opéra. Auguste became premier sujet at the Opéra in Paris and London. He retired in 1816, but continued to teach. Particularly free in his style of dancing, he is considered a precursor of the Romantic school of dancing.
