Details
JOHN STORRS (1885-1956)
Modernist Head in Profile (Profile Head with Cap) (Hirschl & Adler Galleries 77)
woodcut, 1920, on tissue-thin Japan, inscribed '5th of 5=1st' in pencil, with margins, from the edition of unknown but presumably small size, minor printing defects (touched-in), pale mat staining, very minor soiling in the bottom margin, otherwise in very good condition, framed
43/8 x 43/8 in. (112 x 112 mm.)

Lot Essay

Beneath the '5' is inscribed in pencil a '17', and beneath that, a 19'. Neither the catalogue published by Hirschl & Adler in 1994, nor the publication by Robert Schoelkopf Gallery in 1988 provide any explanation of Storrs' mysterious inscriptions.
