Lot Essay

An upright drawing by Robert in red chalk, signed and dated '176..', in the Albertina, Vienna is very closely related to the composition of the present painting and was probably used as a study for it. The drawing is reproduced opposite p. 24 in P. de Nohlac, Hubert Robert 1733-1808, Paris, 1910.

The present work will be included under "Related Works" in the catalogue raisonné of the paintings of Hubert Robert being prepared by Joseph Baillio with the assistance of the Wildenstein Institute.
