The present lot is a characteristic work by the artist; notable are the fine and detailed modelling of the faces and the objects, the play of light and the subtle colour-scheme. It is to be compared with the signed picture of the same date, illustrated by N. Schadee, ed., Rotterdamse Meesters uit de Gouden Eeuw, 1994, p.171, fig.1.
