Lot Essay

The subject is Christ and Mary Magdalene. The title is derived from St. Luke's Gospel, Ch. 7, v. 47 ('Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much'), but not apparently taken from the Vulgate, where the passage is translated 'Remittuntur ei peccata multa, quoniam dilexit multum'. No doubt the subject had personal significance for Solomon, the black sheep of the Pre-Raphaelite movement who found consolation in religion, specifically at the Carmelite Church in Kensington.
