An elegant couple on a quay at night

The costume of the couple in the foreground suggests a date of execution after 1700. Night scenes are rare in the oeuvre of the artist. The composition recalls the picture, signed and dated 1682, in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin (B. Broos et al., Ludolf Bakhuizen, 1985, p.49, no.523, ill.).
