Lot Essay

The forest floor still life type is rare in the oeuvre of the artist, who mainly painted flower pieces in the style of his father Jan Davidsz. Another example is in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, inv.no. 26/392 (E. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Höllandische Stillebemaler im 17. Jahrhundert, 1995, p.443, no.158/24,ill.).

Mr. F. Meyer has kindly informed us (oral information, on the basis of a photograph) that he would tentatively date the present lot to the 1670's.
