Lot Essay

Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-97) was an English man of letters. He inherited his brother's title in 1791. He was a gifted verse writer. He wrote Castle of Otranto in 1764 as well as Catalogue of Royal and Noble Authors (1758), Anecdotes of Painting in England (1761-71) as well as other books. His literary reputation rests chiefly with his letters which dealt with politics, foreign affairs, literature, art and gossip. There are frequent allusions to the Countess of Lucan in Walpole's letters.
